Cooking Mama by Majesco Entertainment is a cute, stylus-based cooking game for the Nintendo DS. With the accomplished chef “Mama” looking on, players practice their cooking skills by transforming raw ingredients into culinary masterpieces.

Although everyone can agree that the graphics are adorable and the title's novelty is tempting, is this game really worth buying? Is Cooking Mama an appetizing gaming accomplishment, or a culinary clunker?

GAMEPLAY: Mastering the Stylus

Cooking Mama is easy to understand, and even easier to pick up. Players select a dish they want to test their culinary mettle on from Cooking Mama's menu. To make a recipe sucessfully, players must win a series of timed mini-games in which they prepare ingredients, mix them together, and cook them up using the stylus as a universal chef's tool. Most mini-games are easy, but some, like peeling carrots, are much harder than they look.

The completed recipe is given a Bronze, Silver, or Gold rating depending on how well the player fared on the mini-games. Mama unlocks a new recipe to try after each one is complete, to a certain point.

THE GOOD: Graphics, Audio, and Pace

Cooking Mama brings a lot to the table. The graphics are colorful, cute, and bright. The top screen features a smiling, friendly Mama, who offers players advice and encouragement. At first, players will be tempted to fail mini-games just so they can witness Mama's hilariously disappointed expression, her fists clenched and her eyes literally en flambe.

The sound design earns a big thumbs up as well. Be sure to turn the volume up on your DS when frying, sauteeing, chopping, or boiling up your latest creation. The sizzling, percolating, and cutting sounds are expertly done and really add to the gaming experience.

The game itself is also extremely easy to pick up and can be initially addicting. Each recipe only takes a few minutes, so it's easy to play while on break at work or while waiting to be seated at a real-life restaurant. Cooking Mama also very successfully integrates the stylus as the main mode of control, and offers some replay value as it is easy to complete most recipes but difficult to get a gold rating on the first try.

THE BAD: Lack of Depth, Multi-Player Mode

Although the title has a lot going for it, there is still room for improvement. The main problem with Cooking Mama is that the game has very little depth. It doesn't include much real information about cooking aside from listing some of the ingredients necessary for each dish, and gameplay is restricted  to completing recipes.

Unfortunately, the game's multi-player mode is very disappointing. Players can't assist each other with recipes, and are only able to transfer the recipes that they have completed in the single-player game back and forth.

In the end, Cooking Mama is charming to begin with but won't be engrossing for long. Players might find themselves shelving the game after only three to four hours.

THE VERDICT: Is it Worth Buying?

Cooking Mama is great for casual gamers, or those looking to add a simple game they can play while killing time to their collection. The stylus-based controls are well implemented and the graphics are attractive, but the overly simplistic gameplay hurts this title in the end. Since the game is relatively cheap at $19.99, however, it should deliver enough bang for your buck.

This week a legion of diminutive Nintendo robots invades American homes. Chibi-Robo, made exclusively for Nintendo GameCube, puts players in control of a 4-inch-tall robot who travels back in time, meets aliens and blasts robotic spiders, all in a day's work. The cute anime cartoon style of Chibi-Robo belies a bizarre, creative storyline that revolves around little Chibi-Robo, who only wants to bring happiness to his human family.

With the help of his lounge-singer-wannabe sidekick Telly, Chibi meets and communicates with a host of wacky toys that come to life at night. These include a pirate, a mummy, Space Hunter Drake Redcrest (a legendary action hero) and the Free Rangers, a battalion of egg-shaped soldiers. Each character has a distinct personality that shines through as Chibi works to help his family achieve happiness. That's not always easy to do in a home where the parents are having marital troubles, their daughter thinks she's a frog and the teddy bear has an unhealthy addiction to honey.

“Chibi-Robo represents a great blending of American and Japanese pop-culture sensibilities,” said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Its freewheeling approach lets players progress at their own pace while they explore a huge, adventure-filled world.”

Chibi can don a variety of different suits that give him new abilities and help him communicate with other characters in the game. For instance, while wearing his dog outfit he can interpret what the family dog is saying when he barks. Chibi can scare people while wearing his ghost outfit or even turn day into night after putting on his pajamas.

Players can focus solely on their main goals or wander off to do side tasks that help increase the happiness of the household. Whether they fly through the air on their Chibi-Copter or target small obstacles with their Chibi-Blaster, the only restriction they have is a limited power supply. If it runs low, they just plug themselves into the nearest outlet. Chibi-Robo offers the kind of nonlinear approach that Nintendo has pioneered with other games, such as the puppy-training Nintendogs or the music-making Electroplankton. Players can proceed at their own pace and decide how much they want to accomplish at a given time.

The gaming media already has singled out Chibi-Robo as much more than a cute cartoon adventure. According to 1UP.com, “…there's a subversive streak of humor to the game, as well as the ever-fascinating premise of being a tiny creature in an outsized real-world environment…” And IGN.com says”Chibi-Robo is a colorful and lighthearted affair that is appropriate for just about any age group, young or old.”

Chibi-Robo is Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older. For more information about the game, visit www.chibi-robo.com.

I’m not going to suggest how you should go about your business and/or your money but I really think that a Nintendo DS2 is not a must have gadget anymore. And since we’re at it, I have the same opinion about the PSP. Sure I’m not a kid anymore but I still play the occasional game but I use a mobile phone instead. Could you guess which one?

If you said Apple iPhone then you wouldn’t be wrong. But I’ll tell you that not only iPhones, or iPod touches for that matter, are great at playing games. In fact Android, webOS and Windows Phone 7 are, or will be just as good platforms to offer us all the games we could think about playing while on the go.

Sure your kids will probably want a Nintendo DSx or PSP before they’ll ask for a phone. But that’s where the iPod touch and the upcoming Zune HD2 come in so it will be really interesting to see if it’s really worth making portable gaming consoles anymore.

So what’s the deal with the DS2 you say? Well the device isn’t even official. We have the picture above to show you but that doesn’t necessarily mean the product is real. The DS2 will apparently offer two even bigger panels compared to the DSi XL and they will have an even bigger resolution. In fact they seem to be able to almost merge given their bigger size for certain games in which one could use a bigger screen for a better gaming experience.

The DS2 will also pack an accelerometer which is quite a popular feature these days. Furthermore it’s being said that the Nintendo DS2 will feature a NVIDIA Tegra chipset and that it should be arriving later this year. Should we assume that E3 will bring us the official D2 announcement?

Either way you could always go for the iPhone 4G this summer or wait for the first Windows Phone 7 handsets to hit stores this fall before you ask Santa for a brand new Nintendo DS2 this holiday season. What do you say?

DSi XL Versus iPad: The Battle of the Bigger Versions

The Nintendo DSi XL comes out on March 28; the Apple iPad on April 3. Both are essentially bigger versions of things that already exist, but how much of an improvement are they really?

We know that comparing the Apple iPad to the Nintendo DSi isn't exactly fair, but we aren't comparing the two devices to each other on a feature-by-feature basis. Instead, we're taking a look at the value that each holds as an upgrade to its respective ancestor. In other words, is bigger better, and which bigger is better?

Flip through the gallery below in order to get the full effect, or, if you'd prefer, click here to see the article as one long list of words and pictures.

21/09/2009 : 7 reasons to love this beach

Students were sent home from Huntington Beach High School on Wednesday after police discovered what appeared to be an explosive device.

Police were called to the school about 9:30 a.m. to investigate a report that a student was in possession of fireworks, according to Huntington Beach Police Lt. Russell Reinhart.

The school was evacuated – and students later dismissed – after police found what looked like a bomb.

A bomb squad determined that it was a fake device.  Police arrested a student in connection with the incident and charged him with possession of a facsimile of a bomb.

The student was taken to Orange County Juvenile Hall.

A dead newborn baby was discovered by a trash collector Wednesday in a household bin on a residential Redondo Beach street near Pacific Coast Highway, police said.

Redondo Beach Police Sgt. Phil Keenan said the employee of Consolidated Disposal discovered the body about 9:05 a.m. on Irena Avenue during regular curbside trash pickup. The trash collector noticed the body while preparing to empty the bin.

Keenan said that the residential neighborhood is relatively close to heavily traveled Pacific Coast Highway and that it is possible the child’s body was dumped by someone passing through the area.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office has been called to the scene to assist investigators. A cause of death for the child has not been determined. Police did not say whether the newborn was a boy or girl.

Anyone with information is asked by Redondo Beach police to contact investigators at (310) 379-2477.

Also known as Fetterbush, this evergreen shrub is highly toxic if ingested. Florida Hobblebush grows from 8-12 feet tall and will produce bell shaped cream flowers from May to June. It is nearly disease and pest free. It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist soil. It is a graceful multi-stemmed, arching branch shrub that will spread out to around 6 feet. It makes a good specimen shrub for your landscape.

Befaria racemosa Vent. (Tarflower)

Family Ericaceae - Heath family

Genus Befaria Mutis ex L. f. - befaria

Species Befaria racemosa Vent. - tarflower

Tarflower will get up to 6 feet tall and needs a spacing of 4 feet across. It loves sun to partial shade and is an aromatic evergreen. White blooms are seen from late spring to mid-summer. Remember to plant this one in mildly acidic soil. This shrub shouldn't be planted by concrete, as the concrete makes the soil alkaline.

Elliottia racemosa Muhl. ex Ell.(Georgia Plume)

Kingdom Plantae - Plants

Genus Elliottia Muhl. ex Ell. - elliottia

Species Elliottia racemosa Muhl. ex Ell. - georgia plume

Mostly used as a shrub, when in a tree form Georgia Plume resembles the Sourwood. It has multi-flowered plumes that stretch to 15-30 feet high. It is decidedly not shade tolerant as many gardeners have discovered through trial and error. It flowers from June to July and will fruit from July to August. It was founded in 1808 by its name sake Stephen Elliot. It is fine for sandy soils.

Lyonia lucida (Lam.) K. Koch (Fetterbush Lyonia)

This shrub gets up to 3-6 feet tall and prefers full sun to partial shade and moist acidic well-drained soil. It is a rapid grower. There are fragrant white or bluish/pinkish blooms in 3-7 flower clusters in late spring. Its dark green leaves will turn bright orange to red in the fall. You can propagate this by semi hardwood cuttings.

Rhododendron calendulaceum (Michx.) Torr. (Flame Azalea)

Kingdom Plantae - Plants

Subkingdom Tracheobionta - Vascular plants
